Concise Guide to CBD

What is CBD?

Discovered in 1940, CBD or cannabidiol is a chemical compound found within the hemp plant. CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, typically using the CO2 extraction method.  However CBD isn’t the only cannabinoid found within the hemp plant. There are many other compounds working together with CBD to provide relief for a series of different ailments.

How Does it Work?

Unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) CBD does not cause any psychoactive effects. The human body actually already produces some cannabinoids on its own which are used within your endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is actually a series of receptors found throughout the body on your neurotransmitters most of which are found in the brain. CBD helps direct the body to use more of its own cannabinoids to help maintain homeostasis.

What Products Should I Buy?

That’s a wonderful question! There are countless options when purchasing CBD it's hard to know where to start. Let’s take a look at the 4 main categories of consumption.

Tinctures

Tinctures are the most common and most effective method of taking CBD. Tinctures are the extraction of cannabinoids (usually via CO2 extraction method) and are then mixed with a carrier oil which can vary from brand to brand but hemp oil and MCT are the most common options. Tinctures are taken sublingually, oil goes underneath the tongue and is absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth and then distributed throughout the body.

Inhalation

The inhalation method is done by smoking CBD products. Hemp flower and vape being the most common methods but there are also wax and isolates that can be consumed as well. This is the fastest method of consuming CBD as it goes directly into the lungs and then straight to the bloodstream to be transported throughout the body.

Edibles

Edibles take the longest to kick in since you must wait for the digestion process. Edibles are a very easy and convenient method of taking CBD and are wonderful to keep at your desk or workspace. Most often edibles are gummies but you can find a variety of different options like CBD chocolate, coffee, tea, and even honey!

Topicals

Like the name suggests, topicals are creams or balms that are applied directly to the skin. This can be used for joint pain, arthritis, or even skin conditions such as eczema. Topicals will not help with mood but are designed for pain relief. You’ll find many creams will have menthol included in the ingredients to help with muscle tension and stiffness.

There is no right or wrong way to take CBD. Try different products to find out what works for you, your lifestyle, and your needs. If you need a place to start then we recommend starting off with tinctures as they are the most effective method of consumption. The milligrams will depend on the severity of your needs but most of our consumers like to start off with either the 500mg or 1000mg Full Spectrum oil.
